University of Malta – Lead Partner

The University of Malta will lead the ReMED project. The University will contribute to the preparation of the ReMed Platform and its components, the ReMED Assessment System and the ReMED Decision Support Framework, supporting the transfer of knowledge from the CESBA MED project in which it was a partner. The University will lead the initial baseline activity to identify the most recent developments concerning indicators and methodologies for climate vulnerability assessment in Europe. The University
will lead the preparation of the ReMED Training System, including the training material for the organisation of the courses.

The University of Malta Group is the leader of the ReMED Interreg Euro Med Project. The Department of Micro and Nano Electronics and the University of Malta JC are also part of the University of Malta Research team in ReMED. The Sustainable Construction, Materials and Monitoring Research Group at the Faculty for the Built Environment, University of Malta is active in 3 key research areas:
  1. Sustainability of Construction and Climate Resilience
  2. Construction Materials Engineering in particular cement-based materials and
  3. Structural Monitoring and concrete heritage.
Therefore the primary research activities refer to Sustainability and Resilience assessment of the Built Environment; cement-bound materials with a focus on Ultra-high Performance Self-healing Concrete, geopolymer concrete, recycling of waste materials; and the repair and restoration of concrete, durability assessment and structural health monitoring. The group leads the repair and monitoring of heritage buildings in particular Industrial Heritage Structures including the Reinforced Concrete Water Tower research station and other coastal and water infrastructure. The group has been  active for more than 15 years in various key European Research Projects including Horizon 2020, Interreg Med, Interreg Euro Med, Horizon Europe, Interreg Italia Malta, Erasmus+ and MCST Nationally Funded projects.

University of Malta (UM) is the sole public and highest teaching institution in Malta. It comprises 14 Faculties and several interdisciplinary Institutes and Centres. The University has been involved as coordinator and partner in numerous EU-funded projects under various Programmes including FP5/6/7, Horizon 2020, Lifelong Learning Programme, Culture 2000, Tempus, Erasmus+, INTERREG EU-MED-ITALIA MALTA-ENPI CBC MED and various other international and national programmes and initiatives. The University is also represented in a number of European and international University networks and groups.
